The Lost Leonardo15

Dir. Andreas Koefoed | Denmark/France | 2021 | 1h 36m | Starring Martin Kemp, Jerry Saltz, Robert K. Wittman

The story behind the most expensive painting ever, valued at $450 million and claimed to be a long-lost masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci. From the moment it is purchased from a shady New Orleans auction house, the painting quickly becomes the focus of an insatiable quest for fame and power. But as its price soars, so do questions about its authenticity. Unravelling the hidden secrets of the art world, this riveting documentary reveals how vested interests are all-important and how the truth becomes secondary in the murky world of the art market.

Reviews

‘Sweet heavens, this is strong. Making all other art documentaries look anaemic, it’s thrilling, propulsive and provocative’
★★★★★ Kevin Maher, The Times

‘The unknown becomes unknowable. In this story, all interests are vested, and the most esteemed authorities can be – at best – winging it.’
★★★★ Raphael Abraham, The FT
