Tokyo StoryU

Yasujirō Ozu | Japan | 1953 | 2h 16m | Japanese/English subs | Setsuko Hara, Chishû Ryû, Chieko Higashiyama, Sô Yamamura, Kyôko Kagawa

An elderly couple embarks on a poignant journey to bustling postwar Tokyo, eager to reunite with their two grown children. However, their adult offspring are caught up in the whirlwind of their busy lives, leaving the aging parents to their own devices. There, it falls upon Noriko, the widow of the couple’s younger son, to offer them companionship and support. This heartfelt conclusion to Ozu’s loosely connected ‘Noriko Trilogy’ is a deeply moving exploration of the gulf between generations, earning its place as an enduring masterpiece in the world of cinema.

‘Ozu only has to train his camera on a face to uncover a sense of resignation, or longing, or loneliness, and the mood, if you allow it, becomes quite overwhelming.’
★★★★★
Anthony Quinn, The Independent

‘This remains one of the most approachable and moving of all cinema’s masterpieces.’
★★★★★
Wally Hammond, Time Out
