The Shining15

Directed by Stanley Kubrick | USA | 1980 | 2h 24m | Starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers

Jack Torrance accepts a caretaker job at the Overlook Hotel, where he, along with his wife Wendy and their son Danny, must live isolated from the rest of the world for the winter. But all work and no play leads to a psychological disturbance in which Jack becomes haunted by the hotel’s disturbing past and begins to terrorise his family. Stanley Kubrick creates a deeply ominous atmosphere thanks to nightmarish visuals and committed performances from the cast in this undeniably disturbing horror masterpiece.

Reviews

‘Ostensibly a haunted house story, it manages to traverse a complex world of incipient madness, spectral murder and supernatural visions …and also makes you jump.’
★★★★★
Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine

‘The unhurried pace, extended dialogue scenes and those sudden, sinister inter-titles contribute to the insidious unease. Nicholson’s performance as the abusive father who is tipped over the edge is a thrillingly scabrous, black-comic turn…Deeply scary and strange.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
