The Remains of the DayU

Directed by James Ivory | UK | 1993 | 2h 14m | Starring Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Christopher Reeve, James Fox, Peter Vaughan

In 1930s Britain, the meticulously ordered life of a rule-bound head butler is disrupted by the arrival of a housekeeper who develops feelings for him. The potential for romance, coupled with his master’s troubling association with the Nazi cause, tests the butler’s rigid commitment to duty. This elegantly crafted adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Booker Prize-winning novel features outstanding performances from Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, capturing the subtlety and restraint of unspoken emotions.

Reviews

‘Looks grand without being overdressed, it is full of feeling without being sentimental.’
Vincent Canby, The New York Times

‘A classically polished drama about repressed emotions, self delusion and protracted heartbreak, this Merchant/Ivory movie is one of the most affecting experiences of the year.’
Desson Thomson, Washington Post
