Tchaikovsky’s Wife15

Directed by Kirill Serebrennikov | Russia/Switzerland | 2023 | 2h 24m | Russian w/ English subtitles | Starring Alyona Mikhailova, Odin Lund Biron, Filipp Avdeev, Ekaterina Ermishina, Natalya Pavlenkova

In 19th century Russia, Antonina Miliukova is captivated by brilliant composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky from the very moment she first hears his music. Their eventual marriage, however, unfolds as a one-sided and profoundly unhappy union. As Pyotr endures misfortunes, breakdowns, and wrestles with his own sexuality, Antonina’s love transforms into single-minded obsession. A slow-burning historical melodrama, beautifully filmed by dissident theatre director Kirill Serebrennikov (recently released from his Putin-ordered house arrest).

Reviews

‘A bold and stylish work that slips in and out of fantasy and isn’t afraid to use music and sound design as a weapon’
Steve Pond, TheWrap

‘A visionary evocation of the heartbreak and sickness of a woman in love with a Russian icon who doesn’t love her back.’
Mark Asch, Little White Lies
