Directed by Pablo Larraín | UK | 2021 | 1h 57m | Starring Kristen Stewart, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, Jack Farthing

During a Christmas holiday spent with the royals at Sandringham, Princess Diana, struggling with mental health issues, contemplates ending her failing marriage to Prince Charles. Kristen Stewart’s outstanding lead performance and Jonny Greenwood’s (Radiohead) formidable score enrich this dreamlike drama from Oscar-nominated Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (Jackie).

Reviews

‘Carried shoulder-high by a note-perfect Kristen Stewart, Spencer dances between an ethereal ghost story, arch social satire and no-holds-barred psychodrama, while remaining at heart a paean to motherhood.’
★★★★
Mark Kermode, The Observer

‘Showing how the dream of being a rich and beautiful princess curdled into a nightmare might sound like a hard sell, but Spencer pulls it off in heightened, claustrophobic and truly decadent fashion.’
★★★★
Sophie Monks Kaufman, Time Out
