Disco Boy15

Directed by Giacomo Abbruzzese | Italy/France | 2023 | 1h 33m | French w/ English subtitles | Starring Franz Rogowski, Michal Balicki, Morr Ndiaye, Wahab Oladiti, Salem Kisita

Following a challenging journey across Europe, Aleksei, an undocumented Belarusian migrant, reaches Paris and joins the Foreign Legion with the aim of obtaining French citizenship. His narrative intertwines with that of Jomo, a guerrilla fighter in the Niger Delta who also dreams of becoming a disco dancer. Lead actor Franz Rogowski (Transit, Passages) brings a compelling and unpredictable energy to Giacomo Abbruzzese’s visually stunning and dreamlike debut.

Reviews

‘While the plot itself is a little nebulous, the atmosphere that Abbruzzese creates, through a hypnotic, pulsing electronic score and Rogowski’s febrile presence, is unnerving and intense.’
★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer

‘This is bold film-making: a movie that wants to dazzle you with its standalone setpieces, but also to carry you along with its storytelling.’
★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
