Raise the Red Lantern12A
In 1920s China, an educated young woman is sold into marriage with the rich tyrant Master Chen. She soon discovers that behind the palatial luxury of life in the master’s house, she and her fellow concubines are pitted against each other in a struggle for his affections. Visually thrilling and rich with emotion, Zhang Yimou’s Silver Lion Award winner at the 1991 Venice Film Festival stands as one of the defining works of Fifth Generation Chinese cinema. Presented in a 4K restoration to mark the film’s 35th anniversary.

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road.We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We only show a few adverts – less than most cinemas – and we only play a couple of trailers, so please don’t be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
