On Falling15

Directed by Laura Carreira | UK | 2024 | 1h 41m | Starring Joana Santos, Inês Vaz, Neil Leiper, Leah MacRae, Paul Donnelly

Portuguese migrant Aurora spends long hours working at a massive fulfilment centre in Edinburgh, where every move is tracked, and productivity is relentlessly monitored. Trapped between the demands of her job and the loneliness of her limited social life, she seeks out every opportunity to preserve her sense of self. With echoes of Ken Loach, Laura Carreira’s poignant portrait of a woman on the brink delivers a heartbreaking critique of the algorithm-driven gig economy and its dehumanising effects.

Reviews

‘The mood in On Falling is a shade of blue, precisely rendered in small gestures and fleeting moments. As Aurora drifts into ever deeper solitude, the film has the economy of a haiku.’
★★★★
Danny Leigh, The FT

‘This terrific English-language feature debut from Portuguese-born, Scotland-based director Laura Carreira makes a satisfying companion piece to Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You.’
★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer
