Luzzu - The Ultimate Picture Palace

Luzzu15

Directed by Alex Camilleri | Malta | 2021 | 1h 35m | Maltese w/ English subtitles | Starring Jesmark Scicluna, Michela Farrugia, Uday McLean, David Scicluna

A struggling Maltese fisherman must make an agonising choice: repair his leaking luzzu boat that has been in his family for generations, or decommission it in exchange for a government pay-out. The Sundance Jury award-winning debut of writer-director Alex Camilleri is both an intimate character study as well as a soulful lament at the loss of cultural tradition in the face of political progress.

‘Casting real-life fishers as his stars, Maltese-American director Alex Camilleri’s paean to his homeland is a neo-realistic classic in the making’
