Love According to Dalva15

Directed by Emmanuelle Nicot | Belgium | 2022 | 1h 28m | French w/ English subtitles | Starring Zelda Samson, Alexis Manenti, Fanta Guirassy, Marie Denarnaud, Jean-Louis Coulloc’h

Twelve-year-old Dalva lives alone with her father. One evening, the police storm into their home and take Dalva into foster care. As Dalva befriends her new roommate Samia and social worker Jayden, she gradually comes to understand that her relationship with her father was not what she thought. In her poignant feature debut, Emmanuelle Nicot explores the ramifications of abuse with sensitivity and grace, rejecting sensationalism and instead examining the complexity of coercive and controlling relationships.

Reviews

‘By remaining solely within Dalva’s (Zelda Samson) perspective, Nicot abruptly flips the script on the conventional abuse narrative, stubbornly yanking the character out of victim mode and giving her autonomy.’
