Hollywoodgate12A

Directed by Ibrahim Nash'at | Germany/USA | 2023 | 1h 32m | Dari & Pashtu w/ English subtitles

When the US army withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, they left behind over $7 billion worth of military equipment. As the Taliban seized control, they took over a former American base known as ‘Hollywood Gate,’ packed with these valuable armaments. In this gripping fly-on-the-wall documentary, director Ibrahim Nash’at risked his life to expose the frightening yet absurd inner workings of this now heavily armed regime.

Reviews

‘There’s another, even more instructive function here the film provides, though: Much of what we see is what the Taliban wants us to see, but as that’s what’s really important to them, it’s also what we need to see to understand them.’
★★★★
Christian Blauvelt, IndieWire

‘The spoils of war are a chore in this fascinating fly-on-the-wall study of the Taliban’s first year in power.’
★★★★
Xan Brooks, The Guardian
