Hedwig and the Angry Inch15

Directed by John Cameron Mitchell | Canada/USA | 2001 | 1h 32m | Starring John Cameron Mitchell, Michael Pitt, Miriam Shor, Rob Campbell, Andrea Martin

Raised as a boy in East Berlin, Hedwig undergoes a life-changing transformation to emigrate to the United States, where she reinvents herself as an “internationally ignored,” yet fiercely talented, rock diva. Her journey unfolds through music, as John Cameron Mitchell (the film’s writer, director, and star) delivers an electrifying mix of original punk anthems and soaring ballads, woven together with music-video dreamscapes, animated sequences, and flashes of raw emotional truth.

Our screening on Tuesday 2nd September features an introduction by UPP Lead Projectionist and this season curator, Kit Finnie.

Reviews

‘For all its serious subtext, the movingly affirmative Hedwig is raucous, racy and full of hilarious, lowdown survivor’s wit.’
★★★★★
Kevin Thomas, LA Times

‘Is this a tour de force or what? As Hedwig would say, you do the math, honey.’
★★★★
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
