Grand Theft Hamlet15

Directed by Pinny Grylls & Sam Crane | UK | 2024 | 1h 31m

In January 2021, during yet another COVID lockdown, two unemployed actors found themselves spending excessive amounts of time immersed in the online world of Grand Theft Auto—a video game both infamous for its violence and celebrated for its intricate design. Out of their boredom and creativity sprang an unlikely idea: to stage a play entirely within the game. This groundbreaking documentary, filmed entirely inside GTA, delves into themes of isolation, art, and space, delivering an experience that is both unexpected and profoundly moving.

Reviews

‘In a hilarious and surreal documentary, two out-of-work actors decide to stage the tragedy within Los Santos with dreamlike and fascinating results’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘… What ultimately stays with you is the actor duo’s commendable ability to find inspiration and poetic gravitas in silliness, horseplay and tomfoolery, even (and especially) in the darkest of times.’
★★★★
Marina Ashioti, Little White Lies
