Fallen Leaves12A

Directed by Aki Kaurismäki | Finland | 2023 | 1h 21m | Finnish & Arabic w/ English subtitles | Starring Alma Pöysti, Martti Suosalo, Alina Tomnikov, Jussi Vatanen, Janne Hyytiäinen

In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a local karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by numerous obstacles–from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and even a stray dog. Told with his trademark style and deadpan humour, Aki Kaurismäki (Le Harve, The Match Factory Girl) makes a masterful return with this tender tale of star-crossed lovers. Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Reviews

‘It’s romantic and sweet-natured, in a deadpan style that in no way undermines or ironises the emotions involved and with some sharp things to say about contemporary politics.’
★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘It’s a low-key treat with moments of real bliss.’
★★★★
Dave Calhoun, Time Out
