Eyes Without A Face15

Directed by Georges Franju | France/Italy | 1960 | 1h 30m | French w/ English subs. | Starring Pierre Brasseur, Alida Valli, Juliette Mayniel, Alexandre Rignault

In the secluded French countryside, a doctor is riddled with guilt after an accident that he caused disfigures the face of his daughter. In an attempt to restore her looks, he kidnaps young women at night to transplant their faces onto his daughter. This 1960 French-Italian horror shocked audiences on release and still stands up today as a sinister and yet hauntingly elegant story of obsession and the illusion of physical perfection.

Reviews

‘Disturbing, disorienting, quietly terrifying, it’s one of the least known of the world’s great horror movies and, in its own dark way, a startlingly beautiful and artful piece of cinema as well.’
Kenneth Turan, The LA Times

‘Sharp as a scalpel, soft as a caress, this is a weird masterwork.’
★★★★
David Parkinson, Empire Magazine
