Earwig + Director Q&A15

Directed by Lucile Hadzihalilovic | France | 2021 | 1h 55m | Starring Paul Hilton, Romane Hemelaers, Romola Garai, Alex Lawther, Peter Van den Begin

In a dim, claustrophobic apartment in post-war Europe, a man is tasked with caring for a young girl named Mia, whose teeth must be repeatedly replaced with ice prosthetics to manage a mysterious condition. Their isolated existence is governed by ritual, silence, and control, until subtle disruptions begin to unsettle the fragile balance of their routine. Lucile Hadžihalilović’s Earwig is a slow-burning, enigmatic work of psychological unease. Told with austere precision, it unfolds as a meditation on dependency, control, and transformation.

Screening followed by an in-person Q&A with director Lucile Hadžihalilović and screenwriter Geoff Cox.

Reviews

‘Earwig keeps its secrets which is precisely what will ensure that its enigmatic, oneiric visions burrow their way into the darker crevices of the viewer’s consciousness.’
Anton Bitel, BFI Sight And Sound Magazine
