Between The Temples15

Directed by Nathan Silver | USA | 2024 | 1h 51m | Starring Jason Schwartzman, Carol Kane, Dolly De Leon, Caroline Aaron, Robert Smigel

A middle-aged Jewish cantor is losing both his voice and possibly his faith. As he grapples with the expectations of his rabbi, his congregation, and his two mothers, an unexpected figure re-enters his life—his former primary school music teacher, now his later-life Bat Mitzvah student. This poignant and bittersweet odd-couple comedy starring Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore, Asteroid City) and Carol Kane (Annie Hall) explores the complexities of belief, human connection, and what it truly means to be a mensch.

Reviews

‘It’s a little weird, a little sweet and a lot of awkward — a testament not just to the Jewish tradition but the faith we can learn to have in each other.’
★★★★
Adrian Horton, The Guardian

‘A spiky, hilarious, and thoroughly unorthodox screwball comedy about a grief-stricken cantor who loses his voice, only to find that he’s surrounded by a chorus of well-intentioned people who are happy to speak for him.’
★★★★
David Ehrlich, IndieWire
