Antichrist (35mm Screening)18

Directed by Lars Von Trier | Denmark | 2009 | 1h 49m | Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Defoe

Grieving for the loss of their infant son, a couple attempt to repair their troubled marriage by retreating to an isolated cabin in the woods. But when they arrive, nature itself turns against the couple and as they descend into madness, a violent battle of the sexes emerges. A relentlessly powerful allegory of grief and violence, Lars Von Trier’s brutal (and sometimes beautiful) psychological horror remains one of the most gruesome, harrowing and provocative films of all time. Chaos reigns!

A one-off Halloween screening presented on 35mm film.

Reviews

‘Antichrist is a boldly personal film, tossing all von Trier’s ideas about faith, fear, and human nature into an unfettered phantasmagoria, full of repulsive visions and fierce scorn. It’s also the most lush-looking movie von Trier has made in about 20 years.’
★★★★
Noel Murray, The AV CLub

‘A star rating is not much help, since von Trier’s self-conscious arrogance is calculated to split audiences into extremist factions, but Antichrist delivers enough beauty, terror and wonder to qualify as the strangest and most original horror movie of the year.’
★★★★
Kim Newman, Empire Magazine
