Teinosuke Kinugasa’s 1926 silent film follows a man who takes a job at a mental asylum to be near his interned wife. Made without intertitles, it uses rapid editing and double exposure to put the audience inside the patients’ minds, and was shaped by the same wave of German Expressionist cinema that produced The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The film was thought lost for nearly 50 years until Kinugasa found a print in his own storehouse in 1971.

Biography
Hugo Max is a musician and filmmaker based in London. He performs live scores to silent films on solo viola, regularly soundtracking screenings at London’s Prince Charles Cinema, Picturehouse Cinemas and arts venues across the UK and Europe. He has presented nationwide tours focussing on silent horror, expressionism, the films of F. W. Murnau and Alfred Hitchcock and has devised interdisciplinary performances at the BFI Southbank, Austrian Filmmuseum and the Locarno Film Festival.
