Happyend12A

Directed by Neo Sora | Japan | 2024 | 1h 53m | Japanese with English subtitles | Starring Makiko Watanabe, Ayumu Nakajima, Shirô Sano, Shina Peng, Hayato Kurihara

In a near-future Tokyo overshadowed by the threat of a catastrophic earthquake, two mischievous best friends are on the cusp of graduating high school. One night, a daring prank on their Principal sparks the installation of a relentless 24/7 surveillance system. As security tightens and the nation’s political climate darkens, their world is upended. Following his moving concert film Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus, Neo Sora’s fictional debut delivers a bold, allegorical coming-of-age story, brimming with raw energy and a youthful spirit of resistance.

Reviews

‘The movie never loses sight of the personal, involving us from the start in the experiences of Yuta, Kou and their friends, while bringing a light yet lingering touch to larger fears affecting all of us.’
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

‘A crisp and understated piece… And the charismatic young cast brings a lively, impromptu-feeling organic energy.’
Jonathan Romney, Screen International
