A Room With A ViewPG

Directed by James Ivory | UK | 1986 | 1h 57m | Starring Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench

While vacationing in Florence, a young upper-class woman falls for a enigmatic stranger, despite being engaged to someone back home in Edwardian England. Upon her return, she attempts to honour her engagement but finds herself unable to forget her summer romance. Witty, sensual, and elegantly crafted, this film marked the beginning of Merchant Ivory Productions’ celebrated adaptations of E.M. Forster’s works and remains a cornerstone of intelligent romantic cinema.

Reviews

‘It is an intellectual film, but intellectual about emotions: It encourages us to think about how we feel, instead of simply acting on our feelings.’
★★★★★
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

‘The final scene, a ravishing in a room, with a view, as the bells of Florence chime out, would leave only a stone unmoved.’
Catherine Shoard, The Guardian
