Strawberry and Chocolate18

Directed by Juan Carlos Tabío & Tomás Gutiérrez Alea | Cuba | 1995 | 1h 50m | Spanish w/ English subtitles | Starring Jorge Perugorría, Vladimir Cruz, Mirta Ibarra, Francisco Gattorno, Antonio Carmona

In late 1970s Cuba, a flamboyant and fiercely individualistic artist crosses paths with an idealistic young communist. Despite their apparent differences, a friendship blossoms between them amidst the backdrop of social and political upheaval. This entertaining and politically-minded odd-couple comedy earned the Special Jury Prize at the 1994 Berlin Film Festival and holds the distinction of being the first (and to date, only) Cuban film nominated for the Best International Feature at the Oscars.

Screening in partnership with The Oxford Cuba Solidarity Campaign.
