Maona presents: Banel & Adama12A

Directed by Ramata-Toulaye Sy | Senegal | 2023 | 1h 27m | Pular & Peul w/ English subtitles | Starring Khady Mane, Mamadou Diallo, Binta Racine Sy, Moussa Sow, Ndiabel Diallo

A young married couple, striving to break free from tradition, face mounting pressure from their families. As they forsake their birthrights and a drought grips the village, they become increasingly estranged from the local community. Senegal’s submission for the 2024 Oscars, Ramata-Toulaye Sy’s poignant fable unfolds with a slow-burning intensity and a mythic scope.

Our screening on Saturday 16th will be introduced by Maona Director Tatenda Jamera as well as by a live musical performance by Senegalese musician Abdoulaye Samb.

Reviews

‘A striking debut that puts Sy on the map as a purveyor of deceptively gorgeous visions that show flimsy desires at the mercy of the social, and literal, weather.’

Abdoulaye Samb is a guitarist, singer and composer from Senegal. His original music is inspired by Fula and Mandinka cultures and his distinctive musical style has grown out of his travels, collaborations and researches in Africa and Europe. Abdoulaye plays a truly remarkable Senegalese blues, which draws on elements of the rich Fula tradition interwoven with Rumba, Mbalax, Afro-Latin and deep blues. He has played with many great artists and groups such as Assane Mboup, Abdou Diop, Salam Diallo, Daby Balde, Abou Thiouballo and Baaba Maal.
