Raging Bull18

Directed by Martin Scorsese | USA | 1980 | 2h 9m | Starring Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci, Frank Vincent, Nicholas Colasanto

A lacerating biopic of Jake LaMotta, a middleweight boxer who rose through the ranks, earned his shot at the middleweight crown, and faded into obscurity as his life spiralled into paranoia, jealously, and self-destruction. With it’s extraordinary black-and-white cinematography, Robert De Niro’s brutish physicality, and Frank Warner’s ingenious sound design – Martin Scorsese created one of the truly great and visionary works of modern cinema.

Reviews

‘Scorsese might never again find a subject as ideal as Jake LaMotta, the Bronx-based boxer whose public bouts and private demons Raging Bull chronicles with such bruising acuity.’
★★★★★
Matthew Connolly, Slant Magazine

‘The use of pop and opera and the black-and-white photography (by Michael Chapman) are exemplary, the actual boxing a compulsive dance of death.’
★★★★★
Ben Walter, Time Out
