All the Beauty and the Bloodshed18

Directed by Laura Poitras | USA | 2022 | 2h 2m | Starring Nan Goldin, David Armstrong, Cookie Mueller, Marina Berio, Noemi Bonazzi

Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras (CitizenFour) examines the life of photographer and activist Nan Goldin, best known for her intimate photography of the LGTBQ subcultures in 1980s/90s Boston and New York. After struggling with her own addiction to Oxycontin, the documentary follows Nan’s fight to hold the powerful Sackler family to account for their part in the opioid crisis currently ravaging America. An emotionally raw biography that ties Goldin’s work with her activism and personal history. Winner of the Golden Lion (Best Film) award at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.

Our screening on Saturday 11th February features an introductory talk by Uncomfortable Oxford entitled “Sacking the Sacklers: patronage and renaming in the 21st century” by Dr George Regkoukos.

Reviews

‘All the Beauty and the Bloodshed serves as a kind of memorial but also as a reminder of what can be achieved by those who take pain and turn it into truth.’
★★★★★
Raphael Abraham, The FT

‘Already a robust director, Laura Poitras has leveled up with a towering and devastating work of shocking intelligence and still greater emotional power… This is an overwhelming film.’
★★★★★
Sophie Monks Kaufman, IndieWire
