Peter Von Kant15

Directed by François Ozon | France | 2022 | 1h 25m | French w/ English subtitles | Starring Denis Ménochet, Isabelle Adjani, Khalil Ben Gharbia, Stefan Crepon, Hanna Schygulla

A famous filmmaker spends his days drunk and writing his next masterpiece – with a little help from his enigmatic assistant. After a chance meeting, he falls in love with a handsome aspiring actor and invites him into his home where a troubled relationship begins to manifest. François Ozon reworks Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1972’s hyper-stylised classic The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, offering a gender-swapped version that also serves as an indirect portrait of the troubled maestro himself.

Reviews

‘The casting of the meaty, magnetic Ménochet… is smart: his resemblance to Fassbinder adds a self-referential layer to the drama.’
Wendy Ide, The Observer
