John Grierson is sometimes referred to as the father of British documentary and credited with coining the term documentary itself. But from the beginning, female innovators were at work within the genre, including Grierson’s own sisters Ruby and Marion. This illuminating selection of documentary shorts (ranging from 1935 to 1967) showcase their work alongside that of other pioneering female documentary makers in this revelatory programme of new digital restorations.

The screening on Tuesday 7th June (18:15) will include a post-screening discussion with Ros Cranston (BFI National Archive Curator), Kiri Walden (Film Studies Tutor, Oxford University Department for Continuing Education) and Katherine Bradley (The  Oxford International Women’s Festival).

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road.We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We only show a few adverts – less than most cinemas – and we only play a couple of trailers, so please don’t be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
