Seven SamuraiPG

Akira Kurosawa | Japan | 1957 | 3h 21m (+ 5min intermission) | Japanese/English subs | Toshirô Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Daisuke Katô, Seiji Miyaguchi, Minoru Chiaki

One of the most thrilling movie epics of all time, Seven Samurai tells the story of a group of 16th-century farmers, whose village is repeatedly attacked by bandits, asking an elderly rōnin (masterless samurai) for help. He hesitantly agrees and swiftly assembles a motley troupe of warriors to defend and train the villagers.

Strongly influenced by the Westerns of John Ford, Kurosawa expertly sustains the suspense over a lengthy duration thanks to an engrossing story, richly drawn characters, and stunning action sequences. Genuinely epic in scale and tone, Seven Samurai has since become a touchstone for Westerns and Hollywood action movies ever since.

This screening includes a 5min intermission.

This screening is part of the BFI’s national Art Of Action tour. For more information go to: https://www.bfiartofaction.co.uk/home
