The Surfer15

Directed by Lorcan Finnegan | Australia/USA | 2024 | 1h 40m | Starring Nicolas Cage, Finn Little, Rahel Romahn, Julian McMahon, Alexander Bertrand

A man revisits the serene Australian beach of his childhood, hoping to reconnect with his son through surfing. But when a run-in with a group of aggressive locals turns humiliating, he’s pulled into an escalating conflict that slowly unravels his sense of control and sanity. In a nod to the Australian New Wave and cult ‘Ozploitation’ classics like Wake in Fright, director Lorcan Finnegan delivers a hallucinatory psychological thriller starring Nicolas Cage.

Reviews

‘Cage commits, again, to his latest malcontent on the verge, without troubling himself with an Aussie accent in any way, which is classic Cage.’
★★★★
Tim Robey, The Telegraph

‘It’s a film in which the mythic crashes into the ridiculous, the intersection where its star Nicolas Cage has also staked his career.’
Amy Nicholson, The LA Times
