The Man Who Fell to Earth18

Directed by Nicolas Roeg | UK | 1976 | 2h 19m | Starring David Bowie, Rip Torn, Candy Clark, Buck Henry, Bernie Casey

A humanoid alien arrives on Earth in search of water to save his dying planet. Harnessing his world’s advanced technology, he patents groundbreaking inventions and quickly rises to the top of a powerful tech empire. But as he awaits the completion of a ship to take him home, he becomes entangled in the temptations of human life. In his acting debut, rock icon David Bowie is perfectly cast in Nicolas Roeg’s (Don’t Look Now) bold sci-fi vision – a haunting exploration of alienation in the modern world.

Reviews

‘The real story is less about the sci-fi and more about the weirdness on Earth, a woozy dream of greed and alcohol and betrayal, as the gentle Newton is preyed upon by hucksters and the American government.’
★★★★★
Kate Muir, The Times

‘A freaky, compelling concept album of a film.’

Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
