When aging womaniser Harry Sanborn arrives in the Hamptons with his young girlfriend, Marin, they discover that her mother, playwright Erica Barry, is also staying at the family’s beach house. Erica is appalled by their relationship and by Harry’s sexist behaviour. But after Harry suffers a heart attack and is ordered to rest, he has no choice but to remain in the Barry home. Under the care of Erica and his doctor, an unexpected love triangle begins to form.
