Sentimental Value15

Directed by Joachim Trier | Norway | 2025 | 2h 13m | Norwegian w/ English subtitles | Starring Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Anders Danielsen Lie

Nora, a successful stage actress, reunites with her sister Agnes and their estranged father, Gustav Borg, a once-renowned film director preparing a major comeback with a script based on their family. When Gustav offers Nora the lead role and she immediately turns it down, he shifts his focus to an ambitious young Hollywood actor on the verge of her breakout moment. As old tensions resurface and new complications arise, Nora, Agnes, and Gustav are forced to face their difficult pasts. Joachim Trier’s award-winning follow-up to his 2021 hit The Worst Person in the World is a rich and deeply affecting exploration of sisterhood, father–daughter relationships, and the powerful emotional pull of childhood memories.

Reviews

‘To no one’s surprise, Reinsve is immaculately attuned to Trier’s energy, and Sentimental Value is carried by the manic frustration she brings to her part, which is as fun as it is freighted with crisis.’
★★★★★
David Ehrlich, IndieWire

‘This tremendous follow-up to Trier’s 2021 international breakthrough hit The Worst Person in the World flows with a ravishing freeness through the many complex strictures it builds for itself: layered family psychologies; behaviours and secrets that recur and reform across generations; the therapeutic value of art to its makers.’
★★★★★
