In the marshes of war-torn medieval Japan, an impoverished older woman and her daughter-in-law kill lost samurai and sell their belongings to survive. A neighbour returns from battle, and lust, jealousy and rage threaten to break the two women apart. A stolen demon mask seals their fate. Kaneto Shindo’s 1964 folk horror is driven by primal emotion, a frenzied score by Hikaru Hayashi, and stark black-and-white photography.
Hosted in partnership with Talking Movies Oxford, this one-off screening is presented on 35mm film, with a pre-screening introduction by Dr Alexander Jacoby of Oxford Brookes University.

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road.We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We only show a few adverts – less than most cinemas – and we only play a couple of trailers, so please don’t be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
