My Beautiful Laundrette15

Directed by Stephen Frears | UK | 1985 | 1h 38m | Starring Gordon Warnecke, Daniel Day-Lewis, Saeed Jaffrey, Roshan Seth

An ambitious British-Pakistani man decides to open an upscale laundromat in an attempt to make his family proud. During a street fight, he bumps into a childhood friend (a former skinhead) who offers to help, sparking a whirlwind romance between the two. Steven Frears’ culture-clash rom-com is also a groundbreaking and subversive work of social realism addressing racism, homophobia, and the economic divide in Thatcher’s England.
