Mothering Sunday15

Directed by Eva Husson | UK | 2021 | 1h 44m | Starring Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, Josh O’Connor, Odessa Young

On a warm spring day in 1924, housemaid Jane is given the day off by her employers so that they can celebrate the wedding engagement of Paul, a boy from the neighbouring manor. However, a secret affair threatens to ruin the day’s festivities. Based on the novella by Graham Swift, this sensual period romance features an impressive cast of British actors including Academy Award-winners Olivia Colman and Colin Firth.

Reviews

‘A moving drama that shifts back and forwards in time to paint a portrait of its characters’ lives…an intelligent, affecting British drama with a splash of French sensuality.’
★★★★
Anna Smith, Time Out

‘Birch inventively shuffles the cards of Swift’s source in a manner that, at its best, makes the film feel more like an emotional memory than an unfolding narrative.’
★★★★
Mark Kermode, The Observer
