Misericordia15

Directed by Alain Guiraudie | France | 2024 | 1h 44m | French w/ English subtitles | Starring Félix Kysyl, Catherine Frot, Jean-Baptiste Durand, Jacques Develay, David Ayala

Jérémie returns to his hometown for the funeral of his former boss, the village baker. Planning to stay just a few days with Martine, the baker’s widow, he soon finds himself caught in a web of mystery. A sudden disappearance, a menacing neighbour, and a priest with unknown motives turn his brief visit into something far more sinister. Filmmaker Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake) once again explores the blurred lines between love and death, delivering a rural thriller that is both provocative and darkly humorous.

Reviews

‘Desire and dread in rural France…this intriguingly tricky drama has a perverse appeal.’
★★★★
Wendy Ide, The Observer

‘Guiraudie takes a familiar starting point, and then moves off in unexpected directions. This fable-like film lives up to its title by displaying compassion towards its leftfield characters.’
★★★★
Thomas Dawson, Little White Lies
