Memories of Murder15

Directed by Bong Joon-ho | South Korea | 2003 | 2h 11m | Korean w/ English subtitles | Starring Song Kang-ho, Kim Sang-kyung, Kim Roe-ha, Song Jae-ho, Ko Seo-hie

In 1986, a veteran detective from Seoul is tasked with investigating a double murder in the rural province of Gyeonggi, South Korea. As more victims emerge, he realizes they are on the trail of the country’s first documented serial killer. Based on a true story, Oscar-winner Bong Joon Ho’s (Parasite) breakthrough second feature subverts the typical police procedural, delivering a gripping and darkly comedic psychological thriller.

Reviews

‘Most telling of all is that tone, the slow, deep nuancing of what once felt cartoonish, the antic slapstick that suddenly turns sombre. With Bong, you never see what’s coming. And then you’re face to face.’
