I Only Rest in the Storm15

Directed by Pedro Pinho | Portugal | 2025 | 3h 31m | Portuguese w/ English subtitles | Starring Sérgio Coragem, Cleo Diára, Jonathan Guilherme, Jorge Biague, Binta Rosadore

A Portuguese environmental engineer travels to Guinea-Bissau to prepare an impact report for a road project connecting the jungle to the desert. Alone in the oppressive heat, he becomes involved in a complex and unbalanced relationship with two local residents. As tensions rise, he begins to confront the clash between European fantasies and the historical, political, and post-colonial realities surrounding him. Pedro Pinho’s I Only Rest in the Storm is both hypnotic and unhurried, anchored by powerful performances from Sérgio Coragem, Jonathan Guilherme, and Cleo Diára, who won Best Performance in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
