Deprisa, Deprisa18

Directed by Carlos Saura | Spain | 1981 | 1h 40m | Spanish w/ English subtitles | Starring Berta Socuéllamos, Jose Antonio Valdelomar González, Jesús Arias, José María Hervás Roldán, Consuelo Pascual

While working as a waitress, Angela meets Pablo, a reckless young criminal, and quickly falls in love. Drawn into his world, she joins his gang of car thieves, and together they set off on a desperate crime spree, rejecting society’s rules as they speed toward self-destruction. Made in the wake of Spain’s Franco dictatorship, Carlos Saura’s fast-paced and compelling crime drama captures the restless, nihilistic spirit of a generation of marginalised youth during the country’s turbulent transition to democracy, a time marked by unemployment and social unrest.

Reviews

‘The movie’s ability to fascinate us doesn’t wear out, rather, it increases. The actors, with gravity and enthusiasm, bring to life a series of characters that are difficult to let go.’
Diego Galan, El Pais
