Claudine is a single mother who works as a maid for affluent families in the suburbs of New York. One day she meets Roop, a charismatic but irresponsible garbage collector and romance quickly ensues. However, Claudine soon begins to have doubts whether Roop fits into her wider family life. Directed by the formerly blacklisted filmmaker John Berry and starring an Oscar-nominated performance by lead actress Diahann Carroll, this rom-com with a social conscience provides an empathetic chronicle of Black working-class struggle, all set to Curtis Mayfield’s soulful soundtrack.
