Blood on Satan’s Claw18

Directed by Piers Haggard | UK | 1970 | 1h 37m | Starring Patrick Wymark, Linda Hayden, Barry Andrews, Michele Dotrice

In 18th century England, a farmer unearths the corpse of a terrible beast. This chilling discovery sends the villagers into a suspicious frenzy – have they been cursed by a demon or is there a form of mass delusion at play? Considered one of a holy trinity alongside The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General, Piers Haggard’s folk-horror is a uniquely English example of the dual image of witchcraft: an emblem of feminine power, but also one that men will go to any lengths to resist and destroy.

Reviews

‘Some fine performances, superb cinematography and a genuinely nasty streak make this Brit-horror stand out from its contemporaries’
Film4

‘It’s visually beautiful, too, with an unusual but effective use of in-camera framing, and the score by Mark Wilkinson is creepy and immersive.’
Tom Huddlestone, Time Out
