Apur SansarU

Directed by Satyajit Ray | India | 1959 | 1h 57m | Bengali w/ English subtitles | Starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, Alok Chakravarty, Swapan Mukherjee

Apu is in his early twenties, fresh out of college, and aspiring to become a writer. Alongside his professional ambitions, we follow his romantic awakening and his first steps into fatherhood. The extraordinary third chapter of Satyajit Ray’s monumental trilogy is a moving, beautifully shot, and evocatively atmospheric finale.

Reviews

‘An impressive capstone is put not only upon a touching human drama but also upon the development of a genuine artist’s skill.’
★★★★★
Bosley Crowther, The New York Times

‘Apu is not only the logical last act of the trilogy but a unique work in its own right.’
John Gillett, Sight and Sound Magazine
