Save the UPP

Mar 13, 2026 | News

We’re sorry to bring you the difficult news that the future of the UPP is at great risk. Today, we’re launching a campaign to save it.

So that this special cinema is fit for the future we need to invest in better access, better sightlines, better sound quality and more efficient use of energy. We have planning permission and funders keen to support us if we can meet their requirements for a long-term lease.

But our landlord, Oriel College won’t commit because our building is in the footprint of their plans for a ‘Fifth Quad’ to accommodate graduate students.

Not only is the UPP well loved by people in Oxford – it’s defying national trends in ticket sales – it has historical and cultural significance way beyond our city. Opened in 1911, the cinema is housed in an iconic Grade II listed building. It’s one of the oldest independent cinemas in England, and the only one which is community owned, with over 1,200 shareholders.

Help us persuade Oriel College to extend our lease so we can stay where we belong.Sign the Petition HereThere are other ways to get involved – check out our brand new campaign website for details: savethupp.com

Thank you for your support.

Our beautiful art deco inspired auditorium can be found just off East Oxford's Cowley Road.We are open 7 days a week. We open the cinema and box office 30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each film, and the Box Office then closes 10 minutes after the film starts. We only show a few adverts – less than most cinemas – and we only play a couple of trailers, so please don’t be late as the film itself starts very close to the advertised time!
