The Love Witch15

Directed by Anna Biller | USA | 2016 | 2h 1m | Starring Samantha Robinson, Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Laura Waddell, Gian Keys, Jared Sanford

A modern witch searches for love in California using spells, potions, and seduction, but her magic has dangerous consequences. Each romance leaves a trail of chaos, as her longing for connection spirals into obsession. Filmmaker Anna Biller crafts a lush, stylised homage to 1960s Technicolor cinema that is equal parts horror, comedy, and feminist critique of desire and fantasy.

Our screening on Saturday 9th May will include an in-person introduction by filmmaker Peter Strickland who has selected this film as part of our Directors Cuts’ season of classics.

Reviews

‘The Love Witch goes beyond camp, beyond pastiche; it ignites the pulpy surfaces of its tale and produces a smoke of bad-dream sexiness and scariness. It’s a B-movie with A-grade potency.’
★★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘It’s cloaked in a retro wardrobe and soundtrack (much of the music, by Italy’s Ennio Morricone, is sourced from ’60s thrillers) but loaded with irony and a fluid sense of identity.’
★★★★★ Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out
