Eyes Wide Shut18

Directed by Stanley Kubrick | UK/USA | 1999 | 2h 39m | Starring Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Sydney Pollack, Todd Field, Madison Eginton

Bill and Alice, a wealthy Manhattan couple, return to their lavish penthouse after a glamorous Christmas party. But their evening takes a turn when Alice confesses to having sexual fantasies about a stranger, sending Bill into an obsessive crisis of desire and dysfunction. Stanley Kubrick’s final film, released shortly after his death in 1999, was initially met with mixed reviews. However, it has since been recognised as a misunderstood masterpiece—a provocative and darkly humorous tale of privilege, repression, and the primal forces lurking beneath the polished surface of modern life.

Reviews

‘Eyes Wide Shut is above all a masterpiece of sustained tone, a tightrope act that pays off in rich and unexpected ways.’
Nathan Rabin, The AV Club

‘Kubrick left one more brilliantly provocative tour de force as his epitaph.’
Janet Maslin, The New York Times
