The Double Life of Veronique15

Directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski | France/Poland | 1991 | 1h 38m | French & Polish w/ English subtitles | Starring Irène Jacob, Wladyslaw Kowalski, Halina Gryglaszewska, Kalina Jedrusik, Aleksander Bardini

Two young women, both called Veronique, seem to have a single existence, albeit in different countries – one in France the other in Poland. Though unknown to each other, they share an enigmatic and emotional bond as well as a rare heart disease. Aided by Slawomir Idziak’s shimmering cinematography and Zbigniew Preisner’s haunting score, Kieślowski creates one of cinema’s most purely metaphysical works – an enigmatic tale of double identity.

Reviews

‘The elusiveness of the film is precisely the point: it is as beautiful and mysterious as a poem and its formal elegance and conviction are unarguable.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘Compelling, challenging and irresistibly beautiful, this delicate metaphysical masterpiece only emphasises how much cinema lost through Krzysztof Kieslowski’s tragically early death.’
★★★★
David Parkinson, Empire Magazine
