God’s Creatures15

Directed by Saela Davis | Ireland/UK | 2022 | 1h 41m | Starring Emily Watson, Paul Mescal, Aisling Franciosi, Marion O’Dwyer, Toni O’Rourke

In a windswept Irish fishing village, a shocking allegation is made which threatens to rip apart a once tight-knit community. At the centre of the storm lies a mother who is torn between protecting her beloved son and her sense of right and wrong. Emily Watson and Paul Mescal star in this starkly powerful drama exploring the limits of a mother’s love and the lengths society goes to protect the transgressions of men.

Reviews

‘There are no easy answers in this poetic meditation on the symbiosis between mothers and children, and man and nature’
★★★★
Jack Smart, The AV Club

‘It’s bleak and understated, but strong performances and a thorny moral maze give this considerable power despite the gloomy skies.’
Helen O’Hara, Empire Magazine
