Roman HolidayU

Directed by William Wyler | USA | 1953 | 1h 58m | Starring Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert, Harcourt Williams, Margaret Rawlings

Overwhelmed by her suffocating schedule, a European princess sneaks off for an evening of sightseeing while in Rome. When a sedative she took from her doctor kicks in she falls asleep on a park bench and is found by an American reporter who takes her back to his apartment for safety. After discovering her true identity, he bets his editor that he can get exclusive interview with her, but romance soon gets in the way. Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn (in her American debut) are a perfect match in this incredibly charming romantic comedy, restored and re-released to celebrate the film’s 70th-anniversary.

Reviews

‘William Wyler’s film from 1953 is a modern fairytale whose two leads have a charm and innocence that irradiate the whole movie…a lovely film.’
★★★★★
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

‘Timeless, exuberant classic, with Hepburn’s nave sense of fun and perfectly charming performance matched equally by Peck’s lauche and charismatic worldy American.’
★★★★
David Parkinson, Empire Magazine
