The Birds15

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock | USA | 1963 | 1h 59m | Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, Veronica Cartwright

Romance blossoms between a young Californian socialite and a lawyer while on an impromptu vacation to Bodega Bay. However, the town is soon besieged by unexplained bird attacks, which start with isolated incidents but quickly escalate in their intensity. As the residents fight for survival, tensions rise, relationships are tested, and the town descends into chaos. A masterclass in suspense and horror, Hitchcock’s creature feature defies the expectations of a traditional monster movie, instead tapping into primal fears of an unpredictable and relentless force of nature.

Reviews

‘The true genius of the film, based on a 1952 short story by Daphne du Maurier, is the way Hitchcock makes the malevolent birds seem like manifestations of his characters’ mental unease.’
★★★★★
Alastair Sooke, The Telegraph

‘This Hitchcock classic somehow strayed from favour for a while, yet in the realm of popular mythology it is now rivalled only by Vertigo or Psycho.’
★★★★★
Alan Jones, Radio Times
